Cheshire East Council is urging the public to prepare for a high number of roadwork projects in Crewe, to be carried out across the next two months.

These works are to introduce measures to improve safety and facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Motorists in Crewe are advised several roads will be affected over a number of weeks, but the council has sequenced various schemes to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Earle Street will be closed for five days between Vernon Way junction and Grand Junction Retail Park Roundabout. This is for junction improvement works (Ryan Parker).

Roadworks will take place on the following roads:

  • Nantwich Road (from Mill Street to Smallman Road) - 21 January to 25 January. Overnight road closure, 7pm until 6am. Carriageway improvement works.
  • Mill Street - 25 January to 26 January. Overnight road closure, 7pm to 6am. Carriageway improvement works.
  • Earle Street, (from Vernon Way to Grand Junction Retail Park Roundabout) - 22 January to 26 January. Road closure 9:30am to 3:30pm. Earle Street/ Rainbow Street junction improvement works.
  • Earle Street Roundabout - 18 February to 19 February and 25 to 26 February. Overnight road closure, 5pm to 6am. Resurfacing and lining work on roundabout.
  • Vernon Way (junction with Earle Street and Earl Street outside Municipal Buildings) - 29 January to 2 February. 24-hour road closure. Footpath widening.
  • Vernon Way (junction with Earle Street) - 29 January to 24 February. Single lane closures. Relocate zebra crossing.
  • West Street (from Dunwoody Way to Hightown) - 26 February to 22 March. 24-hour road closure. Traffic calming measures and zebra crossing upgrade.

Advanced warning signs and diversions will be in place, with all motorists advised to follow the diversions. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Pedestrians will be allowed access and cyclists may be required to dismount.

During the works along Earle Street and Vernon Way, there will be limited access to Crewe Magistrates' Court, the Municipal Building, Crewe Market Hall, the Lifestyle Centre, as well as other public buildings and businesses.

A number of highway projects will be carried out on Vernon Way and Earle Street Roundabout (Ryan Parker).

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "We acknowledge there is never a right time to carry out extensive road works and drivers are advised to plan their journey in advance and follow the diversion routes.

"These works have been scheduled and sequenced to minimise disruption as much as possible, including the Grand Junction Retail Park.

"All businesses affected have either already been informed or will be informed ahead of the works starting.

"While it is inevitable there will be some disruption, the council will ensure the works are carefully managed and coordinated to minimise delays as much as possible.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience. We ask drivers to be patient and plan ahead.

Mill Street will be closed overnight between 7pm and 6am on Thursday 25 January and Friday 26 January. This is for carriageway improvement works (Ryan Parker).

"Some of these works are funded through the Safer Roads Fund, which is designed to reduce the number and severity of fatal and serious injury collisions on the 50 highest risk road sections in England.

"There is no financial impact on the council's highways budget for these schemes"
