New 20mph speed limit scheme proposed for 10 roads in Crewe
A new 20mph speed limit scheme aiming to "create a safe environment for pedestrians and motorists" has been proposed for Crewe's West End, affecting 10 roads in the area.
On Wednesday 25 October, Cheshire East Council proposed a new speed limit order to implement 20mph speed restrictions in Crewe.
This order comes after three serious and seven slightly personal injury collisions were reported along the proposed section of West Street between July 2018 and June 2021.
Under proposals, West Street will be declassified as the A532, which will be reclassified to Dunwoody Way.
This 20mph speed order would affect the following Crewe roads:
- West Street - From a point 111m West of Monk Street to a point 23m east of Broad Street Including Hightown Junction.
- Broad Street South - From Hightown junction to a point in line with the boundary line of properties 43 and 45.
- Underwood Lane - From its junction with West Street to 10m north of its junction with West Street.
- Oxford Street - From its junction with West Street to 10m north of its junction with West Street.
- Derby Street - From its junction with West Street to 15m north of its junction with West Street.
- Goddard Street - From its junction with West Street to 10m south of its junction with West Street.
- Grosvenor Street - From its junction with West Street to 10 m north of its junction with West Street.
- Bright Street - From its junction with West Street to 10m south of its junction with West Street.
- Richard Street - From its junction with West Street to 10m south of its junction with West Street.
- West Avenue - From its junction with West Street to 10m south of its junction with West Street.
A Cheshire East Council statement read: "Please support the 20mph proposal for West Street.
"Personal injury collision data was reviewed for the period July 2018 to June 2021, which showed three serious and seven slight personal injury collisions occurred along this section of West Street.
"A high number of personal injury collisions involve vulnerable road users. Multiple shops are located on West Street which makes the pedestrian flow high.
"The proposed raised tables and introduction of 20mph zone along West Street are intended to improve safety of the road and amenity of the area.
"The measures should reduce speeds and deter vehicles from using this section of West Street and reroute along Dunwoody Way.
"This is complimented by works already completed to declassify West Street and reclassify Dunwoody Way as the A532.
"Overall, this will create a safer environment for pedestrians and motorists."
