The resurfacing of a neglected road and neighbouring footpaths in Crewe have been pushed back to the summer, after safety-critical utility works have arisen.

Stewart Street, between Alton Street and Langley Drive, reopened on Friday 6 March, following the first phase of footway resurfacing works.

Phase two, set include the resurfacing of the Crewe West road, and the final footpath works, has been postponed until at least Monday 15 June.

This is due to urgent Cadent Gas works set to take place on Victoria Avenue from Monday 16 March to Friday 12 June.

Multi-way signals will be in place on Victoria Avenue during this three-month period, allowing the utility works to be completed.

The full resurfacing of Stewart Street was initially targeted to be completed by February 22, but this was first pushed back and now delayed.

Cheshire East Highways said: "Phase one of the footway improvement works will be completed on Stewart Street on Friday 6 March and the road will reopen.

"We will return in the summer to complete the remaining footway works, along with the road resurfacing and road‑marking works.

"This change to the programme is necessary to minimise disruption in the area, as a utility company are carrying out safety‑critical works on the nearby Victoria Avenue until 12 June

"Resurfacing cannot take place until their works are complete.

"We understand that there is no right time to work in such a key location and this scheme has been carefully planned to minimise disruption."
