A POLICE officer was injured as he attended to a motorist who had fallen victim to yobs dropping missiles off a bridge on the outskirts of Crewe.

Cheshire Police are appealing for witnesses to two incidents on Sunday (January 2) and yesterday (January 3) which saw concrete blocks and bricks dropped off the A500 bridge between Cheerbrook and the Shavington roundabout.

The officer and the motorist were injured after the second incident when a van was in collision with a stationary police patrol car.

Police say the incidents have happened around the same period of the day, early morning between 3.30am and 6am.

Sgt Steve Tandy said: "On January 3 an officer attending the report of a car being damaged was injured, along with the person reporting the damage, after a van collided with the officer's stationary patrol car.

"Both were standing away from the cars on the grass verge but the collision resulted in them being injured following the impact. Thankfully the injuries weren't serious, but this could have been much worse.

"This needs to be stopped, and we are working hard with Cheshire East Council and their Highways department to prevent further incidents and find those responsible. We have also increased patrols to deter this criminal activity."

Police have stepped up patrols in the area and the officer added: "The shock and distraction of a concrete block or brick landing on your vehicle could also cause a serious collision. Whoever is doing this is putting people at serious risk of harm."

The force is seeking information, including dash cam footage, of anyone seen acting suspiciously on the Wybunbury Road bridge, which comes out onto Newcastle Road in Willaston.

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or via the website quoting IML 1169596.

Alternatively information can be given anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
