A local parish council is considering calling parish polls to show Cheshire East Council that closing a major Crewe road for 80 weeks - is 'unacceptable.'

The A530 Middlewich Road is currently closed between Pyms Lane and Smithy Lane until March next year.

All works on the new North West Crewe Package are expected to end in November 2023 - approximately 80 weeks time.

This has been deemed 'unacceptable' by Minshull Vernon Parish Council.

Cllr Brian Silvester, leader of Putting Crewe First and parish councillor for Woolstanwood, has requested the parish council to call for an urgent meeting with Cheshire East Council.

This is with a view to 'drastically reducing' the total 80-week roadworks for the NWCP scheme.

Minshull Vernon Parish Council has written to the Leader of the Council to request such a meeting.

It aims to bring together the parish council, borough council, developers, borough councillors for the parish, Dr Kieran Mullan MP, police, fire service and the ambulance service.

Clerk to Minshull Vernon and District Parish Council Mark Robinson, wrote to Sam Corcoran, leader of Cheshire East Council, saying: "The Minshull Vernon and District Parish Council is extremely concerned at the road closures associated with the North West Crewe Package which is having an extremely detrimental effect on the residents of the Parish, Crewe and the wider area.

Work has begun on the field opposite the Leighton Hospital main entrance off Smithy Lane (Jonathan White).

"There is also much concern regarding the access to Leighton hospital and such a lengthy diversion for emergency vehicles.

"To have the roads closed for 80 weeks is totally unacceptable therefore we would like to urge the borough council to reduce the closure to the minimum period possible and only when works to the actual road are being undertaken.

"In other projects it is usual for alternative routes to be in place before such a main route is closed.

"In this regard, we would like to have a meeting with the appropriate council officers/councillors to express the council's concerns and consider suitable alternatives.

"We would also like to invite the local borough councillors and the MP to the meeting.

"Could you please let me know the borough council's views on what the borough council intends to do to improve the clearly untenable position and advise who would be available to attend such a meeting as described above."

The Leighton and Woolstanwood parishes are part of the Minshull Vernon and District Council.

Minshull Vernon Parish Council is considering calling parish polls in Leighton and Woolstanwood, allowing residents to democratically show Cheshire East Council that closing Middlewich Road for 80 weeks is 'unacceptable.'

The response time of emergency vehicles has been severely affected and that could, sadly, lead to a needless loss of life.

Nub News discovered that the diversion route for the road closure creates an 11-minute detour for ambulance services to get to Leighton Hospital.

The closure has also had an impact on waste collection.

Cheshire East Council is expected to respond to Minshull Vernon Parish Council this week (commencing May 30).
