Crewe Steampunk Hattrick event hailed 'success' as large numbers flock to town centre
Crewe's Steampunk Hattrick has been hailed a "success," after large numbers flocked to the town centre for the new event over the weekend.
Saturday 6 April saw the first event of 2024 take over the now locally established venue of LY2, Lyceum Square.
The Crewe Creative Champions, with support from Cheshire East Council, Crewe Town Council, and Arts Council England, brought the Steampunk Hattrick into town with an array of feel-good sights, sounds, and activities for all in attendance to immerse themselves in for free.
The five-hour event was covered by local radio station, The Cat, who provided music and live announcements.
Additional music came from Maisie, a Crewe-based singer who has established herself well locally.
Adults and children embraced the hula-hooping antics of internationally renowned act, Angie Mack, performed and ran workshops for people to get their hips swinging into action with their own hoops.
Walkabout acts took to the town centre and Crewe Market Hall.
The flexible stylings of Big Mob, with their huge slinky costumes, sprung around the town and gave many people something to talk about.
Others will have witnessed Circus Fudge with The Flatulator, the sprout-powered vehicle, making quite the visual impact and giving plenty of laughs to passersby from its loud parpy exhaust.
Many who attended the day in full steampunk costumes, and those who made their hats earlier on the day, took part in a parade around the Market Hall. Prizes were on offer for the lucky winners.
The event was also complemented with a trip into local history. The Ada Nield Chew exhibition, inside the Market Hall, recounting the true-life story of the local social activist and suffragist.
To complement the exhibition, event volunteer Ben Wye took people on the "Around the town in 80 minutes" tour which incorporated information about many local people and places from Crewe's past.
Ben told Nub News: "The 'Around Crewe in 80 minutes' heritage walk was a great opportunity for lifelong residents to share their hidden histories with newer arrivals.
"One of the group told some fascinating stories from her career in the general office working for a senior manager.
"Another revealed that the cafe by the public entrance was the birthplace of Crewe Alexandra Cricket and later the football club.
"Another told a hilarious story about the opening of the three lamps. All are to be shared on the next walk.
"Many thanks to the Crewe Creative Champions and Cat Radio for advertising it, and the council staff for letting us do an impromptu tour of the lovely Municipal Buildings."
Activities on LY2 were in high demand with Creative Crewe running their signature crafting sessions with everyone, young and old, crafting their own steampunk hats.
Another volunteer with the event, Wayne Williams, told Nub News: "The CCC team has worked with the local authorities, the Lyceum Theatre, and Crewe Market Hall to make the day a success.
"That success was amplified by the children and adults who put themselves into the activities, making The Steampunk Hattrick an immersive experience.
"Between the people of Crewe and our local partners, it shows that the town is full of amazing individuals with civic pride.
"This only makes the Crewe Creative Champions hungry to work with the community, and to put on more events at Ly2 in the future."
