OPINION: 'New PM a disaster for UK and the Climate' Green party slams approach to cost of living crisis

The co-chair of a local political party has given their opinion on the new Prime Minister's approach to the cost of living crisis - pushing for immediate change in the use of fossil fuels.
Melanie English, co-chair of Cheshire East Green Party, expressed her frustrations at Liz Truss, formally announced as the new Prime Minister on Tuesday (September 6).
Cheshire East Green Party aims to protect the environment and campaigns for a more sustainable future in Crewe.
It believes this cannot happen unless the government starts investing in more renewable energy.
Here's what the representative of the Cheshire East Green Party told Nub News today (September 8):
"Liz Truss has said in parliament (September 7), that she intends to pursue the increase in production of natural gas from our already depleted North Sea oil and gas fields.
"The Green Party of England and Wales are calling on the new Prime Minister to instead deal with the immediate fallout of the cost of living crisis.
"She needs to tackle the climate emergency by lowering the energy price cap to the October 2021 rate, beginning a massive nationwide insulation programme, and investing in more renewable energy.
"All of Europe is affected by increasing gas prices and reduced availability but the wallets of the UK's population are being hit the hardest.
"The reason for this isn't that we pay more for our gas than our European neighbours but that we use more gas.
"We have been over reliant on gas to heat our poorly insulated buildings and to produce electricity, precisely because of the historical "success" of our own North Sea oil and gas fields.
"Although 60% of UK electricity is now produced by renewable energy sources, a proportion that's not to be sniffed at, the UK market is structured so that electricity prices are currently set by the most expensive unit produced, - gas.
"Equally as important, gas prices are set internationally so the limited increase achievable in British North Sea production would have little to no impact on British energy prices and in any case would take several years to reach the levels needed to have any impact at all.
"Experts are predicting that the factors currently driving gas prices up will remain in place for several years and so this energy crisis is likely to last for at least this winter and next.
"In the Guardian on 1 September their environment editor said: 'There is widespread agreement from energy experts on the best solutions: a large-scale and rapid insulation programme and a faster rollout of wind and solar energy, which produce electricity that is currently about nine times cheaper than that from gas, as well as short-term financial support for bill-payers.
'The government has consistently failed over the past decade to deliver major insulation programmes and has effectively banned onshore wind.'
"All this and increased pressure on climate change which would result from burning more fossil fuel this plan couldn't really get any worse.
"Green Party co-leader Carla Denya said last week: 'Burning more fossil fuels will simply speed up climate breakdown, giving us more extreme heat, floods, storms and food shortages in the UK and across the world.'
"Voting Green at local and general elections is one of the ways you can send a message to government that you do not want this future for our country and our children.
"Look out for the Green Party representatives on your Cheshire East ballot papers in May next year."
Melanie English is the fourth political party member to speak out on the new PM to Crewe Nub News.
This comes after Crewe and Nantwich Conservative MP, Dr Kieran Mullan, on Monday, Crewe West Labour councillor, Connor Naismith, on Tuesday and leader of Putting Crewe First, Brian Silvester, on Wednesday.
