A major road in Crewe is set to close for around six weeks until mid-November, allowing highway improvement works for a new 20mph programme.

From Monday 7 October, sections of West Street, between Dunwoody Way and Hightown, will be closed in stages until Sunday 17 November.

As part of the Safety Roads Fund, the works include upgrading the existing zebra crossing between Dewes Street and Rigg Street, and resurfacing sections of the carriageway.

The West Street works will be carried out in five stages, running from 7 October to November 17 (Ryan Parker).

Cheshire East Highways will install install speed cushions and raised tables on West Street, at the junctions with Derby Street and Ford Lane.

They will also relocate and improve the visibility of existing uncontrolled crossing points, as well as refreshing road markings.

The West Street works will be carried out in five stages as follows:

  • Phase one: From Underwood to Ford Lane - Closed from 7 October to 17 October
  • Phase two: From Derby Street to Broad Street - closed from 18 October to 27 October
  • Phase three: From West Avenue to Richard Street - closed from 28 October to 1 November
  • Phase four: From Underwood Lane to West Avenue - closed from 2 November to 6 November
  • Phase five: From Hightown to Goddard Street - closed from 7 November to 12 November

Improvements at the Broad Street/Hightown junction are also expected to commence this October.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "We are carrying out highway improvement works on West Street in Crewe, from Dunwoody Way to Hightown, to introduce measures to improve safety and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Cheshire East Highways will install install speed cushions and raised tables on West Street, at the junctions with Derby Street and Ford Lane (CEC).

"The works are part of the Safer Roads Fund, which is for road safety improvement schemes to reduce the number and severity of fatal and serious injury collisions on the 50 highest risk road sections in England.

"The level of risk is based on the Road Safety Foundation's analysis and report on road safety nationally.

"A signed diversion route will be in place, and we advise motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to follow these routes.

"We acknowledge there is never a right time to carry out extensive road works and drivers are advised to plan their journey in advance and follow the diversion routes.

"These works have been scheduled and sequenced to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Cheshire East Highways will relocate and improve the visibility of existing uncontrolled crossing points, as well as refreshing road markings (Ryan Parker).

"All businesses affected have either already been informed or will be informed ahead of the works starting."

Provision of a cycle route along West Street and Vernon Way is being reviewed alongside wider walking and cycling plans for Crewe.
