A super Crewe Alex FC fan is currently travelling 5,000 miles to see his side face Ryan Reynolds' Wrexham this weekend, an away game he has not missed since 1988.

Gavin Worrall, who currently lives in San Diego, California, embarked on his 5,300-mile journey around midnight (GMT) on Friday 29 September.

The loyal Crewe Alex supporter wants to maintain his record of not missing an away fixture to Wrexham FC's Racecourse Ground for 35 years.

In that time, Mr Worrall has crossed the Welsh border for close to 10 away matches with Crewe.

The most recent away clash came on Tuesday 22 April, 1997, in what is now known as League One, where the sides drew 1-1.

Crewe took an away following of 1,013 on the night with Mr Worrall one of them.

Seth Johnson had put The Alex 1-0 up in the 62nd minute, with the side featuring the likes of Robbie Savage and Shaun Smith.

Crewe's lead was short-lived with Mark McGregor equalising for the The Red Dragons.

Over 26 years on, Mr Worrall will be looking forward to seeing Crewe go head-to-head away to Wrexham once again, joining 1,064 other Alex fans.

Under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham have lifted themselves to seventh in League Two, currently one place behind Crewe (Wikimedia Commons).

Both sides have had strong starts to the season sitting in the playoff positions, with Crewe in sixth and Wrexham in seventh position.

After arriving in Cheshire, Mr Worrall told Nub News: "Wrexham was always the first match I looked out for on fixtures day.

"I was due to come back around this time to see my new grandkids. It just so happens I have dropped for three Crewe games while I am here."
