Three creative Crewe primary school children are celebrating being awarded the winners. after taking part in a vibrant 'Active Travel' poster competition earlier this year.

The initiative, launched by Crewe West councillor, Ben Wye (Labour), and Bikeability instructor Gareth Roberts, aiming to encourage more children and families in South Cheshire to choose active travel options like walking, scooting, or cycling.

The competition was inspired by a brand new pedestrian and cycle link set to open in 2026, between Nantwich Road and Crewe town centre.

To celebrate, Bikeability instructors reached out to schools, inviting students who had completed Bikeability training to get creative and share their ideas through posters.

Nearly 50 enthusiastic children, aged 9 and 10, took part in the challenge.

After much consideration, the instructors named Ipshita Singh, a Year 4 pupil from Monks Coppenhall Academy, as the overall winner.

Runners-up were Phoebe Willett from Wistaston Church Lane Academy and Phoebe Clark from Shavington Primary School.

Gareth Roberts praised all the young artists, saying: "As well as teaching children to ride their bikes safely, we also talk about the benefits of staying active.

"The standard of posters was fantastic, it was tough to choose a winner. Ipshita's stood out for being colourful, eye-catching, and for clearly showing the many positives of active travel."

Ipshita's efforts earned her the special title of Junior Active Travel Champion of Crewe 2025.

Her prize bundle included a Tesco goodie bag, fun accessories from Everybody Health and Leisure, and a family ticket to the Nantwich Show on 30 July.

The Mill Street Corridor will include the installation of a new shared cycleway/footway, new street lighting, improved signage, a new surface water drainage system and new trees and vegetation (CEC).

Ipshita said: "Thank you so much for these prizes, we need to go by cycle, scooter or walk, and if it's a long distance, go by public transport to reduce pollution."

Cllr Ben Wye said: "It was wonderful to see the kids so engaged.

"Their posters show what young people want for their town. Now it is the adults' turn, they can share their views through the Cheshire East Council consultation on active travel."
