Work begins on 30-week Crewe walking and cycling route project

Works have started on a new walking and cycling project linking Crewe town centre with the railway station, aiming to provide a safer and greener route.
The Mill Street Corridor scheme got underway on Monday 23 June, one of nine projects being supported by the government's Towns Fund and Crewe's allocation of up to £22.9m of funding.
Works to deliver the The Mill Street Corridor improvements are being delivered in phases by Cheshire East Council, with the latest phase covering the route between Railway Street and Mill Street, adjacent to Lidl.

This scheme is expected to take around 30 weeks to complete, with the duration of the works aiming to help minimise disruption to businesses and residents.
The Mill Street Corridor will include the installation of a new shared cycleway/footway, new street lighting and improved signage.
It will also include a new surface water drainage system and the planting of new trees and significant other vegetation along the route.
The public space improvements will run along Nantwich Road, Pedley Street and Railway Street, cutting through Waverley Court and Wesley Place.

From there it will run north along Mill Street, towards the town centre.
In March, deputy leader of Cheshire East Council, Cllr Michael Gorman, said: "The Mill Street Corridor will provide a new clear connection, separate to motorised traffic.
"It will link two key areas of Crewe and makes it easier for people to choose more sustainable and healthier forms of travel, which is of course much better for both them and our environment.
"While providing this new cycling and walking route, the project also focuses on making the spaces along it high-quality, accessible, and safe, while supporting biodiversity and encouraging community use of the area.

"Importantly, the project is planned to link up with other schemes in development that will create further cycling and walking routes and expand Crewe's active travel network, improving connectivity in and around the town centre."
The Mill Street Corridor route is planned to link up with the Valley Brook Corridor Scheme and the Southern Gateway Link, supported by the Towns Fund and the government's Future High Streets Fund.
