A CREWE charity which supports victims of domestic abuse has secured a £60,000 grant to help with its work which has soared during lockdown.

Cheshire Without Abuse has received the government cash as cases of domestic abuse continue to rise. Its services play a crucial role in preventing women being drawn into crime and help reduce rates of reoffending for those that are.

The charity is one of 38 organisations which are set to receive almost £2 million in government funding so their work steering women away from crime can continue.

Crewe and Nantwich MP, Kieran Mullan said: "No-one should be made to feel scared in their own home, which is why the work of charities such as Cheshire Without Abuse is so vital.

"Unfortunately, cases of abuse have risen during the lockdown, so I'm sure this funding will be most welcome."

The funding comes as the government looks to reduce the number of women in custody and improve conditions for those serving time.

Over £5m has been invested in services supporting women in the criminal justice system since 2018.

This latest funding will help cover running costs such as wages, rent and bills at a time when many charities have additional demand for their services due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lucy Frazer QC MP, Minister for Prisons and Probation said: "This funding boost will allow frontline services to continue the incredible work they do with some of the most vulnerable women in our society to prevent them being drawn into crime.

"Many female offenders suffer complex issues and have experienced very traumatic lives. It's only by addressing this that we will break the costly cycle of reoffending."

Cheshire Without Abuse, My CWA, runs a drop-in service at the Lily Jones Support Centre at Mill House in Brook Street in Crewe. It has a 24-hour helpline for those affected by domestic abuse which can be accessed by ringing 0300 123 5101.
