Council gives green light for new Crewe 24-bed specialist care unit
Cheshire East Council has given the go-ahead for a 24-bed specialist care unit in Crewe, located towards the West End of town.
Inspired Life Care Ltd plans to expand its existing care home provision at Telford Court, Dunwoody Way, by constructing the new two-storey building on grassland near the existing care home.
On Wednesday (May 1), the southern planning committee was unanimous in approving the scheme.
The approval comes three years after a proposal for an 18-bed facility on the site was refused.
Planning officer Daniel Evans told committee members today the earlier scheme had been a lot closer to the neighbouring properties and was refused on amenity grounds.
He said the revised scheme addressed those reasons for refusal.
The proposal is for residential care with residents living within bedrooms, with communal lounge areas and outdoor space.
This building will be largely two storeys in height facing Dunwoody Way, with some staff accommodation such as staff room, kitchen and offices within the roof space.
It will be separate from the existing care home on the site, with the access in between and the car park re-located to the rear.
The scheme proposes an additional nine parking spaces, bringing the total to 47, including the existing spaces for Telford Court.
Mr Evans said: "This is below the council's standards but they have carried out surveys for the development.
"The surveys indicate there's only 73 per cent [used] at the maximum peak week day for the parking provision on site and 62 per cent spaces used at weekends, so no objection from highways point of view."
Cllr Andrew Kolker (Dane Valley, Conservative), requested the number of disabled spaces be increased, as there are just three proposed across the entire site. He also asked they be re-located.
This was conditioned as part of the approval.
Haslington councillor Steve Edgar (Conservative), proposed the application be approved and this was seconded by Cllr Mike Muldoon (Sandbach, Conservative) and all eight councillors voted in favour.
