Customers formed a long socially-distanced queue at the new Aldi store in University Way

SHOPPERS were out in force today on Crewe's newest retail site as Aldi opened its doors on University Way.

Staff were on hand to greet customers who formed a long socially-distanced queue which built up as the new store opened up at 8am. It replaces the retail giant's supermarket on the Grand Junction Retail Park which shuttered up last night.

MORE than 2,700 people have signed a petition protesting against the reintroduction of car parking charges in Crewe.

Crewe and Nantwich MP Kieran Mullan says elderly residents have been left baffled by a new automated payment system after the parking machines were unbagged with some left relying on the generosity of passers-by to pay their fees.

PUBS, restaurants and hairdressing salons in Crewe have been given the go-ahead to re-open on July 4 the Prime Minister announced a further raft of lockdown easing today.

The measures also include a change to the social distancing guideline with a relaxation of the 2m rule to "one metre plus" which means staying one metre apart while observing precautions to reduce the risk of transmission.
