A West End Labour councillor has put himself forward as a Crewe & Nantwich MP candidate - attempting to run at the next general election.

On Saturday 27 May, Crewe West councillor, Connor Naismith, announced his intention to apply for the Labour candidacy in Crewe and Nantwich at the next general election.

The Cheshire East Council Labour chief whip had been "encouraged" by family, friends and local residents to be a parliamentary candidate.

Connor Naismith was re-elected as a Crewe West Labour councillor in the Cheshire East elections on Friday 5 May - receiving 911 votes (Belinda Ryan).

Cllr Naismith was re-elected in the Crewe West ward alongside Marilyn Houston in the Cheshire East elections on Friday 5 May - receiving 911 votes.

The Crewe resident told Nub News: "Having been encouraged by friends, family, residents, and colleagues across the labour movement, I am delighted to today announce my intention to apply to be Labour's parliamentary candidate for Crewe and Nantwich at the next General Election.

"Standing in Crewe and Nantwich is personal to me. It's where I live with my wife, a local primary school teacher, and daughter, who was born at Leighton Hospital.

"Recently, I spearheaded our local election campaign as Crewe and Nantwich Labour's campaign co-ordinator.

"In these elections we won in places the Labour party has never won before.

"I've demonstrated I know how to take on the Tories and win, and now I want to do that as our Labour candidate at the next general election.

In the coming weeks, local members of the Labour party will have the opportunity to decide on their next general election candidate.

This process will culminate in a hustings event where members will each have a vote on a number of candidates.

"Cllr Naismith added: "As a local councillor in Crewe, I have demonstrated a track record of delivering for my residents and being a visible presence in the community.

"Crewe and Nantwich needs this from their MP, not one who is preoccupied with looking for a safer seat like Kieran Mullan MP."

The next United Kingdom general election is scheduled to be held no later than 28 January 2025.
