Two rushed to hospital as baby rescued following Crewe house blaze

Two people have been taken to hospital following a serious blaze at a family home in Crewe, after a six-month-old baby was rescued from a window.

At 12.41pm on Saturday 19 April, emergency services were alerted to an incident on Walthall Street.

Two fire engines from Crewe and rapid response rescue unit from Nantwich arrived at the scene, discovering a blaze in the bedroom of a terraced property with thick black smoke pouring out.

Three people, a 40-year-old man, and two four-year-old children exited the property, with a six-month-old baby and 18-year-old woman trapped in an upstairs bedroom.

By the time firefighters arrived, the baby had been rescued following a community effort to get a ladder.

The woman and baby were given first aid by fire crews and taken to hospital by North West Ambulance Service paramedics (Nub News).

The three other occupants were taken to Leighton Hospital as a precautionary measure, with all suffering smoke inhalation.

All of the families injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Cheshire Police put a cordon in place on Walthall Street while the house fire was dealt with.

A Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to reports of a house fire on Walthall Street in Crewe.

"On arrival they found a fire in a bedroom of a terraced property.

"They used breathing apparatus and hose reels jets to extinguish the fire. A high-pressure fan was used to clear smoke from the property.

"Two casualties were given first aid by firefighters and then taken to hospital by paramedics.

"Police attended and put a cordon in place while the incident was dealt with."

Police told Nub News enquiries in relation to the cause of the fire are ongoing, with the incident not believed to be suspicious.
