With 2023 drawing to a close, Crewe Nub News has complied a list of the top six developments that came to the town this year.

6 - Rustic Bar & Bistro - Victoria Street

Rustic Bar and Bistro launched in Crewe town centre this July, inside the former Big Apple Cafe unit (Ryan Parker).

Rustic Bar and Bistro launched in Crewe town centre this July, inside the former Big Apple Cafe unit.

The new business is operated by couple, Jessica King-Evans, and Dale King-Evans, who also run Crewe Market Hall's Mighty Burger Club.

Rustic Bar and Bistro offers breakfasts, main meals, bar snacks and nibbles.

It also offers soft drinks, hot and cold drinks and alcoholic beverages.

Currently, only the downstairs of Rustic Bar and Bistro is open, with major renovation works taking place upstairs for a night time area.

5 - Mel's Kitchen - Crewe Market Hall

The eatery is operated by joint-owners Melanie and Paul Southern, with support from their two daughters.

Mel's Kitchen is popular for its breakfasts, pie and mash, Yorkshire wraps and a variety of desserts.

The traditional food stall also serves a variety of fresh baguettes, baked potatoes and children's options.

Mel's Kitchen replaced former Mexican Eatery Mexicano De jimmy, which closed down in December 2022.

4 - PureGym, Grand Junction Retail Park

PureGym officially opened its 24-hour facility on Crewe's Grand Junction Retail Park this August (Ryan Parker).

The gym chains offers members a contemporary functional area, cardio equipment and a fixed pin and free weights area.

It also includes group exercise studio classes and access to personal trainers.

There are a variety of workout spaces within the former Sofology unit, as well as changing and shower facilities.

Customers can freeze their memberships with PureGym or leave at any time. Free parking is available on Grand Junction Retail Park for three hours.

3 - LY2, Lyceum Square, Crewe town centre

This summer saw Lyceum Square becoming a mixed-use space to host events, festivals, performances, and activities throughout the year (LY2).

The development included a new raised events stage with an integrated digital screen, as well as colourful and multi-functional street furniture and improvements to key gateways into the square.

An eagle mural was designed on Crewe's former market sheds (Crewe Central), with new street lighting installed.

LY2 aimed to enhance the setting of Crewe Lyceum Theatre and Crewe Market Hall, creating a cultural heart for the town centre.

Since officially opening, the new town centre space has hosted live music, film screenings and more.

2 - Matalan, Grand Junction Retail Park

Crewe's first ever Matalan store opened on Grand Junction Retail Park this November, much to the delight of local residents (Ryan Parker).

Crewe's first ever Matalan store opened on the town's main retail park this November, much to the delight of local residents.

The 20,000 square foot unit is designed to offer a spacious shopping experience.

It has dedicated sections for womenswear, menswear, and kidswear, including Claire's Accessories. 

Matalan is employing a total of 45 staff, with seven previously of Wilko.

The clothing chain is open 9am to 8pm (Monday to Friday), 9am until 7pm (Saturday) and 10:30am to 4:30pm (Sunday).

1 - Tenpin, Phoenix Leisure Park

Tenpin officially opened its New Crewe entertainment centre in February, creating 49 jobs (Ryan Parker).

The Dunwoody Way venue offers 25 bowling lanes with TV booths, two themed escape rooms, a laser tag arena, arcade space, pool tables and a soft play area.

Tenpin has a variety of food on offer, including a burger and pizza menu.

It also has a huge bar offering a large drinks menu , with a variety of cocktails, beers and spirits.

Tenpin Crewe is open 10am to midnight (Sunday to Thursday) and 10am to 1am (Friday and Saturday).
