Drivers across Crewe are open to switching to electric vehicles, but only if it fits seamlessly into everyday life, according to new research from Swansway Motor Group and multi-award winning, independent estate agent, Stephenson Browne.

The Life in Gear survey, promoted in partnership with Nub News, gathered over 1,500 responses locally and reveals that EV interest is strong, but conditional.

Practical factors such as home charging access, parking security and commute convenience outweigh ideology when it comes to making the switch.

The findings suggest that EV adoption isn't being held back by resistance to greener cars, but by infrastructure.

A significant proportion of respondents said they would be more likely to consider an electric vehicle if a charger was already installed at their property.

However, many also stated they would be willing to install one themselves if required.

Within a 15 mile radius of Crewe, just 1.5 per cent of properties currently listed for sale include an EV charging point, according to data from Stephenson Browne (Photo: Nub News).

On average, installing a home EV charger in the UK costs £1,000 to £1,200, a relatively modest one off investment compared with broader home improvement spend.

One study showed around 76 per cent of homes with a charger outperformed local value averages and uplifts of more than £50,000 in some areas. (Source, Plug In Stations: EV Charging Installation Costs).

Parking emerged as one of the most important lifestyle considerations across all respondent groups. Whether drivers lived in detached homes, semi-detached properties or flats, access to secure parking consistently ranked highly.

The data suggests that off street parking is no longer seen as a luxury, but as a necessity, particularly when considering future vehicle ownership.

It also highlighted a clear link between housing decisions and car ownership.

For many households, the home now directly influences what vehicle feels realistic to own. Drivers in detached and semi-detached properties, who are more likely to commute by car, showed heightened sensitivity to home charging and driveway access.

Meanwhile, those living in flats or apartments were more reliant on transport links, but where car use remained important, parking access was still a key concern.

For drivers without off street parking, particularly flat owners, recent government updates to the EV chargepoint grant, boosting support up to £500 until 2027, could make home or shared charging more accessible and help remove one of the key barriers to EVs. (Source: AM Online, Government upgrades EV charger grant support until 2027).

The local findings align with national trends; industry reporting consistently identifies access to reliable charging, especially at home, as one of the primary barriers to EV uptake.

There are now nearly 87,000 EV charge points across the UK and an estimated 680,000 home chargers installed nationwide - yet access to home charging still ranks as a key practical barrier to ownership for many drivers. (Source, RAC: Electric car statistics and data 2026

The Life in Gear survey reinforces that narrative; Drivers aren't rejecting electric vehicles outright, they're asking whether ownership will work smoothly within their existing routines.

There is also a law making angle that could influence future uptake. Since 2022, most new build homes in England are required to have electric vehicle charge points installed as standard.

As more housing developments include built in EV infrastructure, this could naturally accelerate electric adoption by removing one of the key friction points identified in the survey.

Within a 15-mile radius of Crewe, just 1.5 per cent of properties currently listed for sale include an EV charging point, according to data from Stephenson Browne.

While this figure only reflects homes on the sales market rather than rental properties, the estate agent notes that including lettings is unlikely to significantly increase the percentage, highlighting how limited home charging availability still is across the local housing market.

An additional question raised by the findings is whether the growth in EV sales is being matched by the growth in home charging installation.

While electric vehicle registrations in the UK continue to grow year on year and charging infrastructure, both public and domestic expands rapidly, research still shows access to convenient charging remains one of the most influential factors in people's decision to buy an EV. (Source, SMMT: UK new car market breaches two million as almost one in four buyers go electric)

If infrastructure is expanding at pace with vehicle registrations, it would support the survey's conclusion that convenience is the key driver of adoption. If not, it may highlight where further investment or education is required.

A representative from Swansway Motor Group said: "This research shows that drivers aren't opposed to electric vehicles, they're pragmatic.

"In a wider State of the Nation consumer report, EV purchasing and charging behaviour was explored and convenience consistently came through as one of the biggest influences.

"Access to reliable home charging gives people confidence, once drivers can see how an EV fits naturally into their day-to-day routine, they're far more open to making the switch."

The broader results suggest cars are viewed as a fixed and essential part of everyday life, much like housing itself.

Respondents did not indicate panic around vehicle costs, instead demonstrating that motoring is budgeted for and prioritised accordingly.

Crewe drivers appear ready for a greener future, as long as it's a convenient one. The shift to electric may not be about persuasion, but about ensuring the infrastructure keeps pace with growing interest.

The conversation now turns to the community. What would convince you to buy an electric car? Would better access to home charging make a difference? And would you like to see more electric vehicles on Crewe's roads?

As this research suggests, when sustainability and convenience align, adoption is far more likely to follow.
