Anwyl Homes says it is investigating how sewage spewed onto land at one of its new housing developments in Crewe close to a children's play area.

Cheshire East Council and the Environment Agency (EA) were both called to the pollution incident at the Alexandra Gardens site over the weekend and cordoned off the affected area.

Cheshire East posted an update on Facebook yesterday informing residents the leak has now been stopped.

It said: "We continue to work with the Environment Agency to respond to a sewage leak at a privately-owned pumping station near Hotspur Road in Crewe. The leak has now been stopped.

"We continue to advise residents to keep children and pets out of any cordoned off areas.

"If you have come into contact with the sewage, wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap and make sure that any open cuts or sores have been thoroughly cleaned and covered."

The leak occurred on the part of the site developed by Anwyl Homes.

A spokesperson for Anwyl Homes told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "We are aware of the situation at Alexandra Gardens and swift action has been taken to address matters.

"An investigation is now underway as to the root cause of the issues and recommendations and safeguards will be put in place following the investigations."

The EA said it had managed to minimise the impact on the water course.

An EA spokesperson told the LDRS: "We have attended the site of a sewage pollution incident in Fowle Brook, near Crewe where we worked with partners to stop further pollution entering the River Dane.

The sewage leak occurred on the part of the site developed by Anwyl Homes (Ryan Parker).

"We have notified Cheshire East environmental health department due to spillage onto land in the local area, however, due to our action, impacts to the water course have been minimised."

Crewe East councillor Hazel Faddes (Labour), said she was very concerned about what had happened.

"It's caused a lot of worry for residents, especially as it's near to a play park," she said.

"It's hard for parents to keep children in. Lessons must be learned from this.

"I would like to thank all the agencies who attended the site, including Cheshire East and the Environment Agency who responded as soon as they were made aware."

Residents took to social media to praise Cheshire East Council and the EA for their prompt action.

One said: "To be honest Cheshire East and Environment Agency responded amazingly."

Another said: "Excellent response from Cheshire East and from other parties involved."

The EA said members of the public who may have spotted pollution in their area, can call the 24/7 incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
