A popular Crewe town centre live music and entertainment venue has permanently closed down after 65 years, making way for a new care home development.

The Crozzy, Chester Street, shut its doors for the last time on Saturday 1 June, following a final performance from 1980s tribute act, Electromantics.

Formerly known as the Crosville Social Club, the venue first opened on Mary Street in 1959, moving to its current location in 1960.

Formerly known as The Crosville club, the venue was the place to go for gigs, tribute bands, birthday parties and almost anything in-between (Ryan Parker).

Under the management of Nigel and Sam Woodhouse, the 300-capacity venue reopened in June 2022 with a new name and look, receiving a full decoration to bring it up to date.

Over the years, The Crozzy was the place to go for gigs, tribute bands, birthday parties and almost anything in-between.

In October 2023, McCarthy and Stone approached The Crozzy's landlord to acquire the site, with them coming to an agreement.

The developer will soon demolish the existing buildings for a 51-apartment development, along with landscaping and new car park.

In a social media statement, The Crozzy said: "Well that's it. It's sad to say your club is no more. Thanks to every act that performed and person who danced and all the staff.

"Thanks Nigel and Sam for giving it a go.

"We have had some amazing nights over the years and I am going to miss the place as it's been a part of my life for 14 years.

"R.I.P. The Crozzy, 1959 to 2024."

Exclusive to over 60s, McCarthy and Stone say the development will offer 51 "cost-effective and low-maintenance" retirement apartments.

The developer promises the Crewe town centre retirement complex will have "well-maintained" communal spaces, as well as a large lounge area and landscaped gardens.

The Crozzy's landlord gave the venue's management team nine months notice of the closure, meaning all planned gigs and events could go ahead.

Despite searching for suitable alternative venues in the Crewe area since, no site for The Crozzy has been found.
