Crewe Railway Station business applies to extend hours following imminent town centre closure

A major Crewe Railway Station business has applied to have its opening hours extended - following the imminent closure of its town centre store.

WHSmith, Platform 5, Crewe Railway Station, applied for a new premises license this month (January).

The major UK retailer currently closes its station store at 7:30pm (Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, Thursday), 7pm (Saturday) and 8pm (Friday and Sunday).

WHSmith has applied to be open and able to serve alcohol until 8pm seven days per week (Ryan Parker).

Under new proposals, WHSmith, would be open and able to sell alcohol until 8pm seven days per week.

In December, the retailer announced it would be permanently closing its Crewe town centre shop, Victoria Centre on Saturday 1 April.

A WHSmith spokesperson told Nub News: "We can confirm that the WHSmith store in Crewe will be closing in April 2023.

"Unfortunately, we are unable to continue to trade viably from this location and the decision has been taken to close the store as a result of the forthcoming lease expiry.

"We are disappointed to be losing our presence in Crewe and remain very thankful to our customers for their support.

"We are also extremely grateful for the commitment of our in store colleagues who we will support with this transition and redeploy to nearby stores, where possible."

WHSmith will be closing down its Crewe town centre store with the Post Office.

This month (January), stationary retailer, Ryman, Victoria Centre, told Nub News it wants to move Crewe's Post Office into its own store.

WHSmith aims to have its new Crewe Railway Station premises license approved in February.
