Major traffic delays have been reported south of Crewe after a tree collapsed into a busy village road, striking overhead power lines.

At 1.58pm on Thursday 29 May, a large tree fell down on Newcastle Road, close to the junction with Cobbs Lane, Hough, leaving both sides of the road totally blocked.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson told Nub News: "At around 1.58pm today, officers in Crewe responded to reports of a fallen tree in the Hough area.

"Attending the scene on Cobbs Lane, it was found that a tree had fallen and struck several overhead power lines.

"Officers are currently on the scene on Cobbs Lane at the junction for Newcastle Road and are assisting colleagues from Highways with road closures and, as a result, Cobbs Lane is currently closed.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternate routes where available. "

Scottish Power arrived at the scene to remove and replace the damaged power lines.

When the work is complete, the fallen tree will be removed from the road.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "We received a report this afternoon regarding a large tree obstructing the carriageway.

"The fallen tree has damaged a Scottish Power cable.

Scottish Power is working to remove and replace the damaged live power cables. Once work is complete the fallen tree will be removed from the road (Nub News).

"Scottish Power are currently on-site to safely address and remove the live power cables.

"Our highways team will then proceed with clearing the tree from the road.

"We anticipate the road will remain closed until later this evening to allow for these essential operations to be completed safely.

"We will issue an update once the road has been reopened.

"We appreciate the public's patience and understanding while we work to resolve this issue."
