Major traffic delays were reported south of Crewe after a tree collapsed into a busy village road, striking overhead power lines.

At 1.58pm on Thursday 29 May, a large tree fell down on Newcastle Road, close to the junction with Cobbs Lane, Hough, leaving both sides of the road totally blocked.

Cheshire Police and Cheshire East Highways remained at the scene for several hours with Cobbs Lane and the affected section of Newcastle Road closed overnight.

On May 30, it was agreed Scottish Power would take control of the site, removing the tree by the end of the day.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson told Nub News: "At around 1.58pm on Thursday 29 May, officers in Crewe responded to reports of a fallen tree in the Hough area.

"Attending the scene on Cobbs Lane, it was found that a tree had fallen and struck several overhead power lines.

"Officers were on the scene on Cobbs Lane at the junction for Newcastle Road and assisted colleagues from Highways with road closures and, as a result, Cobbs Lane is currently closed.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternate routes where available. "

Scottish Power arrived at the scene to successfully remove and replace the damaged power lines.

High winds prevented Highways from cutting the remaining tree down as it was deemed not safe. It is expected the roads will reopen on Friday 30 May,

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: "We received a report on 29 May, regarding a large tree obstructing the carriageway.

"The fallen tree damaged a Scottish Power cable.

Scottish Power removed and replaced the damaged live power cablles, with high winds preventing Highways clearing all the tree on May 29 (Nub News).

"Scottish Power were on-site to safely address and remove the live power cables.

"Our highways team then proceeded with clearing the tree from the road.

"The wind prevented them cutting the remaining tree down as it was not safe.

"On May 30, our highways team met with Scottish Power. They agreed Scottish Power would take control of the site with their own tree gang coming out to remove the tree by the end of the day."
