Crewe was bursting with excitement this Spring Bank Holiday as almost 15,000 spectators filled Broad Street and Brooklands for the return of the UK's largest touring soapbox derby, Krazy Races.

The event, delivered in partnership with Crewe Town Council, brought the local community together and raised vital funds for this year's headline charity, Newlife, supporting children with disabilities and terminal illnesses.

20 creative soapbox teams, representing local businesses, charities and community groups, raced head-to-head down Broad Street with new features, including a smoke tunnel and speed bump challenge.

The day kicked off at 10.45am with a grand parade, led by newly elected Mayor of Crewe, Councillor Sally Graham, AO's iconic green bear, Nugget from charity partner Newlife, event mascots Krazy Dog and the participating teams.

Crowds were kept entertained throughout by Ste Johnston, well known as the comic lead in Crewe Lyceum's recent beloved pantomimes.

After a full day of racing, fun, and 'kraziness', Team SK Bombardiers took home the first place trophy with a fastest time of 20.82 seconds.

They narrowly beat last year's winners Spreadwise, who came in second with a time of 21.05 seconds. Rounding out the top three was Team Boughey from Boughey Distribution, finishing with a time of 21.62 seconds.

Two trophies were awarded to Jo Jo's Day Nursery, with one for Best Performance and another for the Team of Teams Award, as voted by fellow competitors.

The Best Krazy Designed Kart went to Evolution Vans, while the Public Vote Award, with nearly 4,000 votes submitted, was won by AO, collecting over 800 votes alone.

Head of brand at Sarah Belcher Events, Danny Scoffin, told Nub News: "Crewe once again showed us just how special this town is.

"From the incredible turnout to the energy of our teams and partners, we are so proud to have kicked off the Krazy Races season here.

"A huge thanks again to Crewe Town Council for inviting us back and supporting us every step of the way, and of course to the thousands who came out to cheer and support."

The Full Top 7 Lap Times were:

  • SK Bombardiers – 20.82s
  • Spreadwise – 21.05s
