A former South Cheshire community pub looks set to be converted into a funeral home and a self-contained flat - after closing down at the beginning of the year.

The Rifleman, James Hall Street, Nantwich, announced its permanent closure in January 2023 with its landlords deeming the pub "no longer financially viable."

This June, Gavin Palin, applied to Cheshire East Council for permission to convert the building into afuneral home for Gavin Palin Funeral Services with a flat above.

The Rifleman, James Hall Street, Nantwich, closed this year after its landlords announced the pub was 'no longer financially viable' (Robinsons Brewery).

A planning document submitted with the application says the exterior of the existing building is undergoing repair and refurbishment and very little change to that is proposed.

This document reads: "The floor area for the proposed offices cover 183 sqm and the flat will have three bedrooms.

"The proposed layout and floor plans demonstrate that the uses have been developed in a way that they do not give rise to amenity issues, nor will they be out of character with their surroundings."

Access to the site will be off James Hall Street. The existing external stairway will serve as access to the self-contained flat and the funeral home will be accessed through the existing ground floor doors.

The document states that while employment at The Rifleman has already been lost as a result of its closure, the proposed funeral home use will provide additional job opportunities.

It adds: "This is a highly accessible location within 350m of Nantwich town centre, with access to public transport, shops, services and community facilities on foot."

The last date for submitting comments is Tuesday 18 July with a target decision date of Monday 21 August (Robinsons Brewery).

It says the property has a private car park which provides adequate parking for the proposed uses and 'the proposal represents an effective and efficient use of a vacant property'.
