Driving school demands new crossing on 'dangerous' bend by Crewe park

A local driving school has called for a new crossing to be installed on a "dangerous" bend outside Queens Park in Crewe, following several "near misses."
Passfaster, operating across Cheshire East, wants urgent action on Queens Park Drive with the current pedestrian island "not fit for purpose."
The island, allowing pedestrians to cross the road between the play area side of the park and the main car park, is located on a bend.

CEO of Passfaster, Johnny Farmer, told Nub News: "The island in place right now to cross the road here is really dangerous. We have seen several near misses and something has to be done.
"Being on such a blind bend in a 30mph zone, which could easily be a 20, needs sorting before it ends in disaster.
"We would like to see a zebra crossing at a minimum installed. A crossing with traffic lights would be another good option.
"This area also needs to be better lit, it is pitch-black down here at night. I know Queens Park is mainly closed when it is dark but it is still a big concern.
"There is no safe place to cross the road for this entrance to Queens Park. Obviously there is a traffic light crossing on Victoria Avenue but that is for that entrance to the park and some distance away.
"This is the most used entrance to the park and the islands in place to cross the road currently are not fit for purpose."
Employing 11 driving instructors, Passfaster is now the biggest driving school across the borough.

Founding the Passfaster franchise seven years ago, Johnny, who grew up in Crewe and once lived in Queens Park's lodges with his grandparents, is in no doubt of what needs to be done.
Johnny said: "Queens Park holds a special place in my heart and I just want the best for its visitors.
"With all the road safety knowledge between all of our instructors, a new pedestrian crossing is definitely required.
"I have seen a lot of motorists giving way to pedestrians when they shouldn't be, slamming on the brakes at the last minute.
"There is the confusion among drivers of 'is this a crossing or not?' because of the island.
"I have seen plenty of concerning things happen here, it is just an accident waiting to happen really.
"Considering there is a playground just through the park gates it is a dangerous stretch of road.
"Several times I have seen kids coming out of park on bikes and scooters with their parents chasing them go straight across the road.

"In those situations it was just a relief there were no vehicles coming. I call on the council to look into this and improve road safety around Queens Park urgently."
Cheshire East Council is unavailable for comment on the issue at this current time.
