A Crewe town centre live music and entertainment venue is set to be demolished to make way for a new care home development, after the site was purchased by a developer.

On Wednesday 4 October, McCarthy and Stone Retirement Lifestyle submitted a planning application for the construction of a new care home at the site of The Crozzy, Chester Street.

McCarthy and Stone want to demolish the existing Crozzy buildings for a 51-apartment development, along with landscaping and new car park.

Formerly known as The Crosville Social Club, the 1959-established entertainment outlet reopened in June 2022 under new management.

Since then, The Crozzy has been a dedicated event and function venue with three rooms that can be used for any event.

It has hosted a wide variety of gigs and tribute bands since, filling its capacity of around 300.

McCarthy and Stone recently approached The Crozzy's landlord to acquire the site, with them coming to an agreement.

The Crozzy told Nub News: "Our landlord had been approached by McCarthy & Stone, for the proposed purchase of land, for the purpose of a new build care facility.

The last date for submitting comments on the application is Wednesday 15 November, with a target decision date of Wednesday 3 January, 2024 (Cheshire East Planning).

"The landlord has exercised his right to use a break clause in our lease.

"We appreciate our landlord giving us knowledge of this proposal nine months before he was required to do so, meaning our planned gigs and events can go ahead.

"Everyone who has booked in is able to have their celebrations with us before a planned exit to allow the site to go towards a facility that Crewe may need.

"Our planned events are still going ahead and we will be booking some final farewell gigs with some of the amazing performers we have had before.

"We are keeping a look out for suitable venues in the area and will let everyone know if we find one."

Since reopening under new management in 2022, The Crozzy has been a dedicated event and function venue with three rooms that can be used for any event (Jonathan White).

Crewe Central councillor, Anthony Critchley, has requested for the application to be 'called-in' and considered by Cheshire East's Southern Planning Committee.

The last date for submitting comments on the application is Wednesday 15 November, with a target decision date of Wednesday 3 January, 2024.
