Crewe town centre's Royal Arcade development works are expected to "re-commence" next week - following a serious crane accident one month ago.

Work on Crewe's new multi-storey car park development, off Delamere Street, has been on hold since Tuesday 6 June after a man suffered "minor injuries" in a crane incident.

A section of concrete was seen falling down from the site with dust flying up into the air.

Since the Crewe crane incident, all major works at the site have been on hold - with an 'internal investigation' carried out by contractors, Bowmer + Kirkland (Nub News).

The large crane in the middle of the development was seen to be unstable - with people from local buildings and around town evacuated by emergency services.

Since this incident, all major works at the site have been on hold - with an "internal investigation" carried out by contractors, Bowmer + Kirkland.

On Friday 7 July, a spokesperson on behalf of Cheshire East Council and contractor, Bowmer + Kirkland, confirmed the investigation was still "ongoing" - with work expected to restart next week.

The spokesperson told Nub News: "To ensure the safety of all those on site and to allow for a thorough internal investigation to be carried out by Bowmer + Kirkland, works at the Royal Arcade construction site were stopped immediately following an incident which occurred on 6 June.

On Friday 7 July, a spokesperson on behalf of Cheshire East Council and contractor, Bowmer + Kirkland, confirmed the investigation was still 'ongoing' with work expected to 're-commence' next week (Nub News).

"The incident resulted in a worker being taken to hospital. He had minor injuries and was discharged from hospital the same day.

"The findings of the investigation, which is still ongoing, will be presented to the Health and Safety Executive in due course.

"Some drainage works have been able to continue on site, and it is expected further construction will also be able to re-commence next week.

"While the construction of the multi-storey car park and bus station had been scheduled to complete by the end of the year, we are currently unable to confirm a revised completion date for these new facilities.

Crewe's new multi-storey car park and bus interchange was expected to be completed in December 2023 - but may now be finished in 2024 (Ryan Parker).

"We expect to be able to provide a further update over the coming weeks."
