Man suffers 'minor injuries' in serious Crewe town centre crane incident

Emergency services were called to a serious incident in Crewe town centre where a man suffered 'minor injuries' - following an incident with a crane.

The incident at Crewe's new multi-storey car park development, off Delamere Street, happened at 2:57pm on Tuesday 6 June.

Cheshire Police officers and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service firefighters rushed to the scene - blocking off Delamere Street.

According to social media reports, a section of concrete was seen falling down from the site with dust flying up into the air (Holly Flynn).

The large crane in the middle of the development was seen to be unstable - with people from local buildings and around town evacuated in case it fell.

Witness to the incident, Dave Lewis, told Nub News: "The crane has a support puller on the end of its hook then I saw something falling to the ground.

"There was really loud crashing and banging then lots of smoke/dust.

"The floor has definitely caved in you can see it all on the ground. It could be a support wall."

Emergency services left the scene around 5pm with the crane and site deemed to be safe (Ryan Parker).

Cheshire Police confirmed to Nub News a man sustained "minor injuries" as a result of the incident.

A spokesperson said: "At 2.57pm on Tuesday 6 May, officers responded to reports of an incident at a building site in Crewe.

"Officers attended the scene and found that one man had sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident.

"However, following the incident, concerns have been raised regard the stability of a crane at the site.

"Therefore, Delamere Street is currently closed and a number of nearby buildings have also been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Crewe town centre was reopened once emergency services left the scene around 5pm - with the crane and site deemed to be safe.

A Cheshire East Council spokesperson added: "The council is aware of the incident at one of our construction sites in Crewe town centre earlier today. 

"Council officers liaised with emergency services, site contractors and the Healthy and Safety Executive on site.

"Access has now been restored and all roads have reopened."
