Creative talent at a Crewe primary school has been honoured with two pupils scooping prizes, in a new story starter writing competition.

Mollie Stoddard, of Underwood West Academy, Newcastle Street, was winner of contest organised by Crewe & District Writers Circle for local schools after she penned a piece about the recent visit of Knife Angel to the town centre.

Fellow Underwood West pupil, Pola Hrynowiecka, came second with Izabela Kutocova, of Beechwood Primary School, coming third.

First and second place winners, Mollie Stoddard and Pola Hrynowiecka, back in the library at Underwood West Academy (Nub News).

Mollie won a £250 cash prize for her school and all three youngsters received Amazon vouchers and book tokens.

Competition sponsor, was owner of Crewe-based Construction Linx building maintenance company, Gareth Williams, who is also a member of the Writers Circle.

The father-of-two told Nub News: "This was our first year of staging the contest and we were delighted at the standard.

"The grammar, story structure and flow was impressive.

"Mollie was topical with her tale about Knife Angel and the meaning behind the visit of the sculpture to Memorial Square.

"She had us gripped with her piece about the day it 'spread its wings and came alive' to hunt down a man in an alleyway holding a knife.

"Well done to Mollie and all those who entered. We loved reading the stories."

Crewe & District Writers Circle, founded 1964, previously ran an International Poetry competition.

The Knife Angel, created from 100,000 seized blades, provided inspiration for Story Starter winner Mollie Stoddard (Ryan Parker).

This year, members wanted to do something different to encourage budding young writers.

The competition, launched earlier this year, gave primary school pupils the chance to build a story round the introduction: It was an ordinary day, but there was something not quite right, something that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and then, something unexpected happened.

The competition was judged by Crewe & District Writers Circle members with a presentation staged at Hope & Beams Centre, Broad Street, attended by Crewe Town Mayor, Cllr Dennis Straine-Francis.

Mr Williams, also a poet known as The Rhymeologist, added: "The aim was to encourage local children to bring their stories to life and explore the creative process.

"We asked for fantastical stories set in Crewe and we weren't disappointed."

The group will now make the Story Starter competition an annual event.
