Crewe £5 million live music venue project set to be dropped

A proposed £5 million live music project for Crewe is set to be dropped - following a review by the town board.

The Lyceum Powerhouse scheme for Crewe was billed as a live music venue and creative skills hub.

Crewe Town Board has asked Cheshire East Council for approval to drop the live music venue project - meaning £5m could be reallocated to other projects.

The LY2 project for Lyceum Square will begin construction in 2023 (Cheshire East Council).

The project has a funding shortfall and an uncertain delivery timeframe - made worse by cost inflation.

Crewe Town Board has requested the funding is reallocated across its remaining nine projects for the town.

£22.9m has been allocated to Crewe through the Towns Fund - securing business case approval from Whitehall.

So far, the Crewe Youth Zone, Crewe Pocket Parks project and Flag Lane community hub has been approved.

Public realm for Crewe's proposed new history has also been approved - along with a redevelopment of the Cumberland Arena.

£14.1m has also been secured for Crewe from the Future High Streets Fund.

Further support could come through the Levelling Up Fund, Shared Prosperity Income Fund and investment zone development,

A report prepared for Cheshire East's economy and growth committee on Wednesday 15 November, highlighted: "significant and persistent cost inflation in the construction sector" - posing a risk to all capital projects.

The Lyceum Powerhouse was aimed at providing development opportunities for young people in the performing arts.

Crewe Town Board has requested funding for the Lyceum Powerhouse project be spread to the other nine Towns Fund projects (Cheshire East Council).

It was devised by Crewe Cultural Forum and HQ Theatres.

This money is now expected to be spent elsewhere on Crewe projects.
