Crewe residents have paid tribute to an 'iconic shop run by a great family' - following the shop owners' decision to retire from the business after 40 years.

South Street News has been run by Mr Gregory Hulme (66) and his wife, Mrs Debbie Hulme (67), since 1983.

The South Street shop, located opposite Crewe Alex, is closing its doors at the end of February - due to the couple's retirement.

Following this announcement on Nub News, a number of readers paid tribute to the popular newsagents and owners on social media.

Reader, Andy O'Neil, praised South Street News, saying: "Iconic shop run by a great family.

"Many memories going into the shop over the years before Crewe games.

"Chippy then into the shop for sweets and a drink as well as before away games."

South Street News has been popular with local residents and Crewe Alexandra players and staff since it opened 40 years ago.

The newsagents is still popular for morning newspaper deliveries in the area - currently delivered by Mr and Mrs Hulme.

Local resident, Steven Otter, worked as a paper boy for South Street News in 1985.

He paid tribute to the retiring shop owners, saying: "Had a paper round back in 85, down Gresty Road, onto Davenport Avenue and the Brookhouse estate.

"Two bags. Wednesday and Sundays were a tough walk. Good luck on retirement."

Gregory Hulme confirmed upcoming shop, AA Food and Wines, was not the reason for South Street News' closure (Ryan Parker).

Earlier this month (January), a new shop, AA Food & Wines applied to open nearby on Gresty Road.

The shop will replace former horticultural store, Grass & Ground, which closed in 2021 - opposite The Mornflake Stadium.

Mr Hulme confirmed the new shop was not the reason for South Street News' closure - relieved local shoppers will have somewhere to go.

Nub News reader, Helen Karen, was happy Mr and Mrs Hulme closed the shop on their own terms.

South Street News will be permanently closing at the end of February (Ryan Parker).

The former Crewe resident added: "End of an era. I left Crewe 20 years ago but remember Greg and this shop so well.

"Glad it's your decision and not a sign of the times. Happy retirement."

Mr Hulme responded to the article and kind comments from readers who commented on social media.

The 66-year-old said: "Yes I'm on my way, will be here for a few games yet.

Gregory Hulme confirmed South Street News will be open for several more Crewe Alexandra matches before its February closure (Ryan Parker).

"Just a big thanks to all you Alex Fans that come in the shop before the games."

South Street News will be permanently closing at the end of February.
