Daughter of former Chester MP, Gyles Brandreth, Aphra Brandreth, was selected as the Conservatives parliamentary candidate for the constituency on Sunday 29 October.

In March, political website, Guido Fawkes, indicated Dr Kieran Mullan MP had been putting his name forward for the Cheshire West seat.

Later that month, it confirmed Dr Mullan spent a day trying to drum up support among Cheshire councillors, plotting a chicken run.

In May, it was Guido Fawkes reported the Crewe MP has now abandoned plans for a chicken run, opening the door for a selection battle.

Dr Mullan said: "I have benefited from being able to speak to a wide variety of people locally (both involved and not involved in the selection process).

"I have given all the feedback I have received a great deal of thought.

"I would like to feel any process that selected me was fair and credible and would have the support of members.

"I think the only way to achieve that now is to be put forward to the final alongside other candidates to allow a choice by members.

"I appreciate the time and effort many of you have put into this process to date and thank you for your time."

Following months of selection drama for the expected Tory safe seat, Crewe and Nantwich's MP has lost out on the seat currently held by former Crewe and Nantwich MP, Edward Timpson.
