Crewe Alexandra's star player delivered an unrehearsed pitch team-talk during his side's big away league victory at the weekend - believing 'the lads needed geeing up a bit.'

Courtney Baker-Richardson scored his ninth goal of the season and assisted Connor O'Riordan to help Crewe win 2-0 away to Doncaster on Saturday 1 April.

The 27-year-old striker revealed he addressed his fellow team-mates on the field before kick-off at Eco-Power Stadium.

Baker-Richardson believed his side's warm-up 'wasn't the best' - wanting to motivate the players before the starting whistle.

The forward told Crewe Alexandra's website: "I pulled the lads together. I felt there were no excuses in this game, and although I'm not the most experienced, I fancy myself as a leader.

"I told (Luke) Offord I was going to get the boys together and he was happy for me to do that.

"For my personal liking, our warm-up wasn't the best, we were trying too much technical stuff, and the lads needed geeing up a bit. I think it got the job done."

Baker-Richardson's first-half strike was his first Alex goal since October.

Last year, the former Newport striker suffered a serious hamstring injury - seeing him sidelined for several months.

Baker-Richardson is now fully fit and closing in on double figures for the season - targeting more between now and the final match of the season.

He added: "I've had to be patient but these are the troubles that you face as a footballer.

"I'm a player who will put it all on the line, and sometimes that means you'll get injuries.

"I rehabbed well, came back sooner than predicted, and I'm just happy to be back with the lads.

"I feel strong and fit but I had to bide my time, and the gaffer has been very good and patient with me, because you can push too much and pick up another injury if you rush things.

"I told my friends I'd score, I'm confident and I know what I'm doing, so I'm happy. I'm happy with the win and with the goal, so we go from there."
