Crewe's MP and a local ward councillor candidate have spoken out after a developer chopped down a number of 'beautiful' trees - making way for a care home redevelopment.

Dr Kieran Mullan and James Pratt were shocked to hear of 11 trees being removed at the site of the Beechmere redevelopment, Rolls Avenue.

The healthy trees bordered the old Beechmere Care Facility, with developers, Advantage, and Your Housing Group, initially agreeing to keep the trees.

The cutting of the trees was reported to Cheshire East Council by James Pratt, council candidate for Crewe St Barnabas, in the May 2023 local elections.

The response from Cheshire East planning was to say it was "causing no significant harm to the character or appearance of an area".

James Pratt told Nub News: "These trees have been present for coming up to 15 years as they were planted when the original Beechmere facility was built.

"The loss of 11 mature trees makes a huge difference to the appearance of the street, it will be a starkly evident once the hoarding of the construction site is removed.

"I was shocked to see many mature trees on the perimeter of the Beechmere site have been cut down. The developer agreed to keep them.

"I reported it to Cheshire East, who said it was "causing no significant harm to the character or appearance of an area."

"It is ridiculous to say this has no impact to the area when so many beautiful healthy trees have been cut down.

"Residents deserve better than this."

Crewe and Nantwich MP, Dr Kieran Mullan, has now written to the developer asking for an explanation and a plan for restoration (Wikimedia Commons).

The Crewe MP added: "I despair sometimes. I will expect a very clear response from the developer.

"As for Cheshire East, they stubbornly refuse to pollard trees that are ruining footpaths, but apparently, chopping down some prominent beautiful trees isn't significant.

"Well done to James for reporting, and I hope the Council rethink and take it seriously.

"Otherwise, other developers will just do what they want."
