Council approves 'addictive' new adult gaming centre in Crewe
Cheshire East Council has approved a new adult gaming centre in Crewe - despite concerns it will have a negative impact on vulnerable adults nearby.
Admiral Casino was approved for Nantwich Road on Thursday (January 12) - three years after it closed one of its Crewe town centre stores.
Operators, Luxury leisure, first applied to open the adult gaming centre on Monday 21 November.
The new casino will be located to Survive, Nantwich Road, a charity supporting vulnerable adults.
A member of the Nantwich Road Action Group objected to the proposals for this reason, saying: "Survive works with some very damaged people and gambling is addictive.
"In the area there are also a number of CEC commissioned facilities for young adults requiring rehabilitation from addiction.
"My grounds for such an objection must be the impact on the amenity of residents and other businesses on Nantwich Road."
Crewe Town Council and Crewe South Labour councillor, Cllr Steve Hogben, also objected to the application.
Admiral has more than 200 gambling venues in the UK - with one already on Victoria Street.
The casino will be opening inside the former Harvest Kitchens store - previously targeted by a Stoke-on-Trent eatery and bar.
Admiral had a second Crewe town centre store on Market Street. It permanently closed in 2020.
A Cheshire East case officer visited the site on Friday 6 January and was satisfied with the plans.
They approved the application, saying: "The proposed material change of would not cause harm residential/aural amenity issues.
"The attendant operational development proposed would preserve the visual amenity of the area.
"It is therefore found that planning permission should be granted."
Cheshire East Council has approved an illuminated Admiral sign for the exterior of the building.
Admiral will construct a unisex toilet, disabled toilet and kitchen/customer care facility.
There will be elevations to the front of the former kitchens store with new glass doors.
Admiral's application was approved four days before the target decision date of Monday 16 January.
