Cheshire League: Crewe FC aiming for better after summer changes

CREWE FC are aiming to improve on a mixed start to their Cheshire League campaign.

The Cumberland Arena outfit have won one of their opening three fixtures after choosing to start the season almost a month later than many of their Premier Division counterparts.

With Liam O'Reilly returning to the club to take the managerial reins at the start of the lockdown there have been changes in personnel, but plenty of promise for the future.

Although the delayed start meant there was some ring rustiness in evidence when Egerton inflicted a 9-1 home hammering in the opening game on October 3.

They were up and running with a 2-0 win over GPSO the following weekend and O'Reilly's side ran a strong Whaley Bridge side close in a nine-goal thriller (4-5) in Derbyshire last Saturday.

Crewe FC Chairman Steve Parker says the club wanted to align its start with the North West Counties League and will now be looking to catch up with their rivals. When the 2019/20 season was voided Crewe were lying second behind Whaley Bridge.

O'Reilly was coaching the club's junior teams and was a natural choice when former boss Jack Turner departed to Whitchurch Alport.

"Liam played for the club for 10 to 12 years and he was looking to get involved managing adult football. I played with Liam for his entire time as a player with the club and he set high standards," said the club's chairman.

"He's settling in with a new team and with new players. Jack took a few players with him, but we managed to keep the core of the squad.

"We've had a mixed start as some teams have played for a month. When we played Egerton they'd had about four or five games and our match sharpness was a real problem.

"But we won the next game and there are plenty of good signs."

Crewe FC host Warrington-based Eagle Sports tomorrow (KO 2pm) after their original fixture at home against Poynton was shelved because the visitors have players from the Greater Manchester area under tighter Covid-19 restrictions.
