102-year-old Crewe war hero receives MBE at Windsor Castle

A Crewe D-Day veteran, who was the youngest sergeant to take part in the Normandy Landings at the age of 20, has received his MBE at Windsor Castle.
Bernard Morgan, the former RAF codebreaker, who deciphered the telegram announcing German surrender, was made a Member of the British Empire in the 2026 New Year Honours list for services to volunteering and history.
The Crewe resident, who joined the war effort on his 18th birthday, picked up his medal at an investiture ceremony with Princess Anne at Windsor Castle on Tuesday 10 March.
Bernard landed on Gold Beach in Normandy on the back of a Bedford truck in 1944, carrying a cypher machine as part of the assaults.
In May 1945, Bernard, who has since been awarded an array of military medals, including a Legion d'Honneur from the French government, based himself Germany working for an intelligence unit.
Speaking to the Press Association after the ceremony, the 102-year-old said he reminded the Princess Royal of the time he found her without security as a child when she was in town for a show-jumping competition.
"I got to the entrance, there she was sat on the grass verge, no police there," he said. "So I had a word with her early, and reminded her."
In recent years, Bernard has given talks at museums, schools and cadet groups, leading to him receiving his MBE.
