A Crewe team of volunteers cleaning up the town's streets has been boosted - receiving support from Co-op members.

Crewe Clean Team, focusing on keeping the town tidy - has grown to 216 members.

As the volunteers' last mission of 2022, they took to the King George V Playing Fields, Coppenhall Lane - their 109th litter pick.

Crewe Clean Team tackled the playing fields, litter picking nearby car parks and West Street.

Chair of Crewe Clean Team, David McDonald, told Nub News: "24 volunteers turned up in their own free time to make their town cleaner and safer.

"I came across the Co-op Local Community Fund on the Internet and I applied to be a Co-op cause.

"The Co-op then picked us and we are now part of the scheme for a year. For every pound you spend on Coop as a member you get 2p back.

"Co-op also donates 2p to a local cause. You can choose what cause you want the money to go to."

Crewe Clean Team has now carried out 109 litter picks in the town (Crewe Nub News).

Crewe Clean Team aims to improve the living environment in Crewe for humans and wildlife.

Each year, volunteers plant hundreds of bulbs at local churchyards and parks.

Crewe Clean Team is one of the new local Co-op causes - supported by Co-op members and the Co-op's Local Community Fund.

Anyone who is a Co-op member and chooses this as a cause will help donate money directly to it.

For every £1 Co-op members spend on selected Co-op products and services, 2p goes back to members and Co-op gives the same to support community organisations and local causes.

Mr McDonald added: "We think being a cause should be very good over the year. It started for us at the end of October.

"One of the local Crewe Co-op managers has even helped us to litter pick.

"Any money we receive will be in cheque form next November. We will put this towards equipment - our biggest expense.

"We need to keep on top of this, but being a cause will be brilliant and will help us to buy specialised equipment."

Crewe Clean Team volunteers will be taking to the town's streets again in February 2023.
