A Crewe Market Hall quizmaster announced the winning numbers in the Crewe Prize Draw before discovering he had won the £1,500 jackpot himself.

Gary Johnson was hosting his Big Thursday Night Quiz at the Earle Street venue when he read out the results of the draw.

The new interim manager of Crewe Market Hall initially suspected the winning ticket might be his, but did not realise he had scooped the top prize until checking afterwards.

Gary won £1,500 but decided to give £400 back to the four Crewe charities supported by the draw, leaving him with £1,100.

He plans to put some of the money towards a new suit for his youngest daughter's wedding, with the remainder going towards everyday expenses.

Gary said: "I host the Big Thursday Night Quiz at Crewe Market Hall, and, of course, we read out the results of the draw.

"So I was here on Thursday night, doing the quiz, and when I saw the ticket, I thought, 'I'm sure that's one of mine.'

"But I didn't realise at the time, so I just gave out the winning numbers, and then it was only afterwards that I checked.

"It was a lovely surprise, a wonderful surprise."

Gary, who is relaunching the quiz under FrontGuyGary Entertainment, has also been helping promote the Crewe Nub News Prize Draw as part of the Thursday night event.

The quiz has grown in popularity since its relaunch, with numbers rising from 17 teams at the beginning to around 22 teams now.

Every other Thursday, the five Crewe Prize Draw winners are announced live during the quiz at 7.30pm.

Gary, who first managed Crewe Market Hall from 2021 to 2023, said he was happy to support the initiative because of his longstanding relationship with Crewe Nub News and its efforts to raise money for local charities.

"As you know, when I was here at Crewe Market Hall for the first time, you and I struck up a great rapport," he said.

"I've always been a great supporter of Nub News, and the fact that you're doing this now to actually support local charities, that was an easy thing to get on board with."

The quizmaster also admitted it felt unusual to be interviewed rather than asking the questions himself.

"It feels very, very strange because, as you say, I'm normally asking the questions, not answering them," Gary added.

"But, yeah, it's a nice view this side of the fence."
