OPINION: Tory cost of living motion 'insulting to the intelligence of residents'
A Crewe Labour councillor has slammed a motion submitted by Cheshire East Council's Conservative leader - thanking the government for its support during the cost of living crisis.
Cllr Connor Naismith, who represents Crewe West in Cheshire East - called out Cllr Janet Clowes for the council's motion.
The motion has been submitted to a full meeting of the council - taking place on Wednesday (October 19).
It asks councillors to thank the government for the "significant work that the government has done to support the residents of Cheshire East."
In a tweet on Tuesday (October 11), Cllr Naismith said: "This motion from CEC Tories is insulting to the intelligence of residents.
"Yes there are global factors contributing to the cost of living crisis.
"It's also true that Truss/Kwarteng doused it in lighter fluid and lit a match so they could go on an ideological binge."
Cllr Janet Clowes represents the Wybunbury ward in Cheshire East.
Back in July, the Conservative leader urged previous Prime Minster, Boris Johnson, to resign.
Cllr Connor Naismith believes current Prime Minister, Liz Truss, is not supporting people enough during the cost of living crisis.
He told Nub News: "It goes without saying that we would want to work with central government to deliver the support that people need in this most difficult of times.
"However, we have to recognise that the actions of the Prime Minister and the Chancellor have made things worse for people in the last couple of weeks, not better.
"If the Cheshire East Tories really think we should be grateful for that then I think they truly are on a different planet to the rest of us."
Today (October 13), Conservative minister, James Cleverly, has urged his MPs not to remove Liz Truss as PM - following mounting pressure on her position.
