Oxford United 1, Crewe 0: late rally fails to salvage point at the Kassam

A LATE flurry proved too little too late for Crewe who are left seeking their first win of the 2021/22 League One campaign.

Substitute Regan Griffiths was left to rue his finishing as he put a header wide in the closing minutes, while Mikael Mandron also headed over as the Alex cranked up the pressure in the last 10 minutes.

But they were eclipsed by Karl Robinson's side, who ultimately took the honours with a first-half penalty (33) awarded for a foul by debutant Terell Thomas on one-time Crewe loanee Billy Bodin.

James Henry beat Dave Richards from the spot and while the Us commanded only a slim advantage and were never a dominant force for the remaining hour Crewe just didn't do enough, although it was an improved showing on Saturday's 2-0 loss at Portsmouth.

Crewe were missing Shaun MacDonald, Owen Dale, James McFadzean, Chris Long and Will Jaaskelainen as injuries and illness took their toll.

Manchester City's teenage starlet Ben Knight started up front in place of Dale after checking into the club on Monday.

The 19-year-old showed glimpses of his talent, but in the middle of the park Crewe couldn't move through the gears to stamp their authority and emulate last season's success at the same venue (2-0).

  • Former centre-half stalwart Steve Macauley should provide a fascinating host for those taking up the new hospitality on offer in the Legends Lounge for Saturday's visit of Accrington.

The package includes a pre-match meal, access to the lounge bar and half-time refreshments at a cost of £40 per person. email [email protected] or call 01270 213014 to book a place.
