THE surge in Covid cases hit the grassroots football scene at the weekend with four of 10 scheduled matches off in the CREWE REGIONAL SUNDAY LEAGUE.

All but one of the CREWE AND DISTRICT LEAGUE fixtures were off for similar reasons, while Crewe FC's CHESHIRE LEAGUE game at Billinge was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

Of the games that did go ahead in the Regional League yesterday (Sunday) Premier Division title contenders Betley won 3-1 at NHB to move within one point of leaders The Lions.

Keiron Duckers scored two for Betley with Danny Lavalette getting the other. Frank Farrington replied for the Bunbury side.

Cheshire Cheese switched their home game with Raven Salvador from Wheelock to Sutton Lane in Middlewich, the first Regional League match to be played at the venue for some years.

They were rewarded with a 4-2 win, thanks to goals from David Sirle (2), Charlie Maines and Rhys Potter. Tom McMorine and Damian Sloan scored for the visitors.

Winnington SC consolidated their position in third place with a 3-1 victory over Talbot, thanks to two goals from Sean Bradley and one from Farrell Duncan. Joe Goodier netted for Talbot.

Division One league leaders Winsford Over played out an entertaining 4-4 draw with Cooper Buckley. Ashley Edwards (2), Ben Burrow and Warren Hudson were on target for Cooper Buckley.

Tom Stanton scored two for Winsford Over, with Will Igoe and an own goal completing their tally.

Nantwich Pirates ran riot at C&N United racking up a 7-1 winning margin with seven different players on target. Joey Hilton, Keiron Jones, Harry Maclennan, Declan Scott, Liam Kelleher Anthony Broadhurst and Sam Rogers were the magnificent seven.

The two bottom placed clubs, JS Bailey and Ruskin Park, met at King George Playing Fields

J~S Bailey led 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Ashley Smart and Dan Goward. However, the visitors staged a remarkable second half comeback, and ran out 4-2 with Luke Jones (2), Dan Dutton and Callum McLaughlin the marksmen.

In the District league Saturday's fixtures involving Crewe Town and FC Bollington, Mary Dendy and AFC Crewe and Sandbach Town Ramblers and Sandbach Curshaws were all off.

The Sandbach Town versus Mary Dendy 1982 survived and honours were shared with a 2-2 draw.

Town led at the interval 2-0 thanks to goals from Martin Serventi and Tom Edwards. But Mary Dendy fought back in the second half with goals from Adam Wakefield and Dan Squire.
