CREWE Railroaders return to competitive action on Sunday, appropriately United States Independence Day.

The American footballers last took the field in 2019 with the 2020 season shelved because of the pandemic.

But after a venue switch Railroaders Head Coach Jason Smith has been preparing his side for action against British American Football Association (BAFA) Premier Team Sandwell Steelers on July 4.

The Railroaders have found a temporary base at Back Lane Playing Fields in Congleton for their 2021 campaign as the club's regular pitch at Cheshire College is not available with the campus' facilities remaining shut.

Cheshire East Council stepped in with the offer of an alternative base.

Jason said: "It is nearly 18 months since we last saw competitive action, in these very strange times. But we are ready one again to put on the helmets, place on our jerseys and represent the area.

"The council has kindly come to our rescue with the area in Congleton best suited for our needs. We are hopeful of a place back in Crewe for next season."

The coach says spectators are welcome to come along and support the team, which includes the club's first female player. Defensive line Carrie Stevenson, who plays for Keele University, has linked up with the Railroaders for this season.

Kick off is 2pm and social distancing in line with government guidelines is essential.

The Railroaders have also launched a partnership with Hickory's Smokehouse in Gresty Green. The American-themed eatery is sponsoring Sunday's game ball and will be the players' "home" after games and social occasions, restrictions permitting.
