Crewe Alex: prospects of more signings ahead of deadline as Railwaymen face 'must win' Gills clash

By Gwyn Griffiths   4th Feb 2022

CREWE Alex hope to complete a busy few days by making "one or two" more signings before the transfer window shuts this evening (Monday).

Assistant manager Kenny Lunt says the club are optimistic that they can add to the quartet of deals brokered last week.

Last Friday frontman Dan Agyei was signed on a permanent deal from Oxford United, while Tariq Uwakwe (permanent) and Ryan Alebiosu (loan) arrived from Chelsea and Arsenal respectively.

Twenty-four hours previously former Everton youth striker Bassala Sambou joined after a stint abroad with Fortuna Sittard.

Sambou came off the bench in Saturday's home loss (0-2) to leaders Rotherham, while the other three new recruits are available for tomorrow night's crucial clash at relegation rivals Gillingham (K.O 7.45pm).

"We've got players to come in [last week's signings] and hopefully a couple more will come in today," said Lunt.

"We feel that we've got some really good players in and we can change what we have been doing. We want people to be fighting for their places. We don't want to in the position where we are having to use [Academy] scholars the day after an FA Youth Cup game.

"We want to have two players challenging for each position. But we have not been able to do that this season through injuries and illness."

And the assistant boss added: "We know we have got players who have been there and done it [at this level]. They've been out on loan to places like Accrington (Uwakwe) and they can help us.

"It's been tough as when you are trying to sign good players there are a lot of things that go into it. Ideally we'd have liked to get them at the start of the month and then we could have got them playing games."

After the flurry of incomings there was another exit confirmed today as out-of-favour defender Terell Thomas agreed to terminate the one-year deal he signed last August.

The 26-year-old struggled to make an impact at the back after leaving AFC Wimbledon and last featured in League One action at his former club on November 23 last year. In all he made 16 appearances for Crewe in all competitions.

Fellow defenders Donervon Daniels (Walsall) and Callum McFadzean (Wrexham) left last week as part of boss Dave Artell's squad revamp. Meanwhile, there has been no indication in any transfer interest in contract rebel Tommy Lowery, who can leave without a fee in the summer.

The Alex will be without teenage defender Zac Williams again for tomorrow's game. The 17-year-old is unwell and Lunt said: "We want him to be as healthy as possible, football comes second to Zac's health.

"The sooner we can get him back the better, but the main thing is that we all hope he is healthy."

Meanwhile, Lunt says he won't be taking much notice of Gillingham's drubbing (2-7) at the hands of Oxford at the weekend.

"We've only won once away from home and we need to do better. Gillingham will be looking to respond and it is a tough place to go," he added.
