CREWE Alex are set for an extended break from action after the Boxing Day visit of Wigan Athletic became another Covid-related postponement.
The Latics asked the EFL to call off the festive clash today (Thursday) after Leam Richardson's squad has been hit by 'several Covid cases' as well as some injuries.
The Railwaymen's trip to Gillingham last Saturday (December 18) was also cancelled because of Covid in the home ranks.
And while boss Dave Artell was hopeful his side could return to action at the Mornflake Stadium on Sunday with the virus so far having had a limited impact on the Alex squad, the Alex players will be left kicking their heels for two-and-a-half weeks provided next Wednesday's trip (December 29) to Morecambe survives the Omicron surge.
Wigan said positive Covid results were identified after the club's game last Saturday at Oxford, but since then further cases have been detected.
Already six of the 10 scheduled Boxing Day games in League have been postponed.
