Have your say on new Crewe link road aimed at easing town centre traffic congestion

PEOPLE are being asked for their views on a road scheme which will link up busy Crewe roads and tackle congestion.

The Flag Lane link would connect Dunwoody Way to Delamere Street via Flag Lane by creating a new junction at the end of Harrison Drive.

Cheshire East Council has launched a survey to gauge reaction to the scheme, which is aimed at improving access to Crewe town centre by creating new routes for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.

It is a long-standing project which is to receive funding, along with other projects, from the borough council's successful bid for the government Future High Streets cash.

Work is planned to start in the spring of 2022 and will be carried out in two phases, with the new link road and junction - which will not have traffic lights - followed by upgrades to local footpaths and the addition of cycle lanes in 2023.

Currently, traffic face a circuitous route from Delamere Street/Flag Lane onto Dunwoody Way via West Street or even Wistaston Road to access facilities such as the Phoenix Retail Park and Eaglebridge Health Centre.

A small number of parking spaces on Harrison Way will be lost as a result of the work, but the council says parking surveys have shown there are alternative options in the area.

Some householders in the immediate area may also be eligible for compensation under the Land Compensation Act, the council states.

Cllr Craig Browne, chair of Cheshire East Council's highways and transport committee, said: "This scheme is part of our town centre-wide plan to reduce congestion and journey times and improve walking, cycling and other active travel options to and from the town centre.

"This scheme will be an important part of encouraging people to visit the town centre more often and stay for longer.

"The feedback we receive through our survey will be used to inform the design of both phases of the scheme. We want to know what people think the benefits of the scheme are and how we can make the most of them.

"We also want to hear their concerns and how they think we can address them."

Other Future High Streets Fund projects are expected to be delivered in Crewe by the end of 2024.

You can take part in the Flag Lane link survey here before it closes on November 1.

The scheme's engagement team can also be contacted by email at [email protected]

And if you want to have your say face-to-face then you can attend a drop-in event at Crewe Market Hall next week on Wednesday, October 6 and Thursday, October 7 between 11am and 6pm.
