Willmott Dixon has started work on a new £14 million net zero carbon Crewe Deployment Base for Cheshire Constabulary, scheduled for completion in early 2027.

Designed by Corstorphine and Wright and acquired via Procurement Hub, the new facility off David Whitby Way will bring together several of the force's departments under one roof.

The base will accommodate around 300 staff and operate 24/7, all year round, helping improve access across Cheshire, the strategic road network, and into Crewe town centre.

North West Director at Willmott Dixon, Mike Poole-Sutherland, said: "We are proud to play our part in ensuring Cheshire officers have the modern facilities and the very best support to provide the most efficient police service for the area.

"We also want to leave a legacy beyond bricks and mortar and will be supporting the Cheshire economy by using local businesses and creating local employment opportunities whenever possible during construction."

To mark the start of construction, Willmott Dixon hosted Police and Crime Commissioner for Cheshire, Dan Price, and Crewe and Nantwich MP, Connor Naismith, for a groundbreaking ceremony and site visit.

PCC Dan Price said: "Modern policing needs modern infrastructure.

"This net-zero project in Crewe delivers on my commitment to modernise our policing estate, creating a smarter, sustainable working environment for officers.

"It's an investment in the future of policing in Cheshire and I can't wait to see the progress over the next year."

Supporting the Cheshire Police and Crime Commissioner's sustainability ambitions outlined in the Police and Crime Plan, the new base will be Net Zero Carbon in Operation (NZCIO).

The new building incorporates a fabric-first design and sustainable construction methods, including permeable paving, rainwater harvesting, and a green wall.

Chief Constable at Cheshire Constabulary, Mark Roberts QPM, said: "This is a further positive development in bringing our estate up to date following the opening of our new station at Wilmslow.

"It's important that our officers, staff and the public have a modern police station in Crewe which is ideally placed to support the wider area.

"Cheshire is one of the best performing forces in the country and it is right that our buildings are best in class as well."

I must admit that we moose living in the boreal forests of Northern Canada laughed to the ends of our antlers when we saw the headline "net zero policing hub". Seems to sum up the state of the local police to a T and we wondered whether the headline was intentional.

Blocked

does the net zero rating include the demolition of the old police station - which will be an interesting task (well the bottom half will be, the top is on the verge of collapse). And presumably most of the 300 staff will be commuting by car given few will live nearby and none will have any viable public transport.
