Cheshire East Council has ditched proposals for one-way street in Crewe as part of the Valley Brook Corridor Scheme, following public feedback.

Last September, the council asked local people to share their views on options for the scheme, part of a package of projects being supported by funding from the Government's Towns Fund.  

At that time, the plan was to connect Queens Park and Edleston Road via a new "accessible, safe and attractive" route for pedestrians and cyclists, which would have made Electricity Street and Alton Street one-way for vehicles.  

A new 20mph zone is proposed on Alton Street and Electricity Street, including traffic calming measures to help pedestrians and cyclists (CEC).

Following feedback from the public, the plans have now been updated to address the key concerns raised.  

Chair of Cheshire East Council's highways and transport committee, Cllr Mark Goldsmith, said: "I would like to thank all those who shared their views on the potential options we had presented for this scheme.  

"The feedback we received was extremely useful in helping us to understand local concerns.

"We have listened to those concerns, looked at what is possible within the funding we have available to deliver changes, and are now developing new plans.  

"We are proposing to focus on improving links between Queens Park and Edleston Road for pedestrians, but without either Alton Street or Electricity Street becoming one-way.

"This was one of the original options we know local people were against."  

Cheshire East is proposing to make improvements to Tipkinder Park and Valley Park (Ryan Parker).

Plans being developed also include:  

• A 20mph zone on Alton Street and Electricity Street, which would include traffic calming measures to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists
• Improving the surfacing of the pavements and road in this area
• Uncontrolled pedestrian crossings on Electricity Street and Alton Street
• Making improvements to Tipkinder Park and Valley Park 

The plans are still under development but will be subject to the relevant permissions and statutory consents before anything is introduced.
