A two-time Crewe Alexandra Wembley winner and a 2020 promotion winner have both left the club - following the expiry of their contracts.

On Friday 12 May, Crewe confirmed Kelvin Mellor and Callum Ainley have played their final matches at Mornflake Stadium.

Mellor, 32, made 42 appearances in his second stint for The Railwaymen this season - scoring two goals.

Mellor first joined Crewe from Nantwich Town in 2008 - helping Crewe achieve promotion [2012] and EFL Trophy glory at Wembley [2013].

The full-back was 'really sad' his time was up playing for The Alex - thanking assistant manager, Alex Morris, for bringing him back in summer 2022.

Mellor told Crewe Alexandra's website: "I'm really sad I'm leaving - the club means a lot to me and my family.

"I'd like to thank all the players for everything this season, and all the staff - especially Alex Morris for bringing me back to the club last summer.

"I've given 100 per cent throughout the season, playing 42 games.

Callum Ainley, 25, helped Crewe Alexandra achieve EFL League Two promotion in 2012 - making a total of 278 appearances (Crewe Alex).

"I'll hopefully see you all soon back at Gresty Road."

Ainley, 25, joined Crewe at the age of eight, making a total of 278 appearances - the 13th highest for the club.

The midfielder was famously part of the 2019-20 squad which earned promotion to League One.

Ainley said he always gave '100 per cent' to The Alex - playing under four different managers.

Callum Ainley made his Crewe Alexandra debut under manager, Steve Davis, in 2015 (Crewe Alex).

The academy product said: "Crewe Alexandra has been a huge part of my life since I joined at the age of eight.

"I'm very proud to have made 278 appearances for the club.

"My eight seasons in the first team have brought highs and lows.

"From making my debut at 17, to my final appearance in the win over Bradford, I have always given 100 per cent."
