Cheshire East has given the go-ahead for two houses to be built on a Crewe site, after deferring the application twice amid fears about potential flooding.

The proposal, for land to the rear of 203 and 205 Middlewich Street, was deferred in January and again in March by the council's southern planning committee after the committee heard the site floods regularly.

The second deferral in March came after councillors heard that nearby gardens were under six inches of water on the day of the planning meeting.

Cheshire East's flood risk officer visited the site and was happy with the recently submitted drainage plans (Cheshire East Planning).

On 5 June, councillors approved the scheme after hearing a detailed drainage design had been provided and an underground storage tank would be constructed to serve the development.

They also heard the council's flood risk officer had visited the site and was happy with the recently submitted drainage plans.

The applicant's agent, Sarah Foster, told Wednesday's meeting: "Significant investigations have been undertaken to a level of detail much greater than would normally be proved at application stage."

She said the detailed drainage and surface water risk analysis concluded 'there is no additional risk of increased flooding in the local area as a result of this small scale application."

Committee chair Joy Bratherton (Crewe North, Labour) said: "I am conscious it has been before us twice before, this is the third time, but I personally feel completely justified that we asked for this to be looked at – the drainage situation.

"We're on clay, it's always a problem in Coppenhall. It seems a very, very good piece of work that the flood risk officer has done."

Crewe North Labour councillor and Cheshire East committee chair, Joy Bratherton (Cheshire East Council).

Willaston councillor Allen Gage (Conservative), said his main concern previously had been that existing residents would be impacted by the new development but he was satisfied with the additional reports provided and he moved the application be approved.

Cllr Janet Clowes (Wybunbury, Conservative), seconded the application, saying: "It was right to get this kind of detail."

The application was approved with nine councillors voting in favour and one abstaining.
